So, I know I am going to go against the grain with this next statement, but here it goes.
I have not read any of the Twilight books (or seen the movie) and I have no desire to do so in the future.
I don’t get what the big deal is? Forbidden love? Teenage, vampire sex?

Please enlighten me if you are a Twilight lover….I would be open to possibly renting the movie.

aaannnddd this is why we are friends.
RIGHT THERE WITH YOU! I don't get it either...haven't read or seen and don't plan to. Just doesn't interest me and honestly I'm tired of hearing about it.! :)
I read the book on my honeymoon because I had nothing else and it was free from the book exchange. It was okay. But really, it was written for a 13 year old girl. Not my style.
I haven't seen the movies or read any of the other books. Oh well, it isn't my taste. As my grandpa used to say, "that's why they have strawberry, vanilla and chocolate ice cream!"
I don't get it either. This is why we're friends, clearly.
I haven't read the books, or seen the movie(s), and I don't have any real desire to. I don't have anything against vampires--I loved Brad Pitt as a vampire in Interview, but, eh, I'm not going to beat down the doors of Barnes & Noble to get my grubby hands on book.
And I really don't get the full on obsessed fanfare with the cast--I don't think any of them are exceptionally good looking.
But, that's just me.
Maybe after all the hype has died down I'll read one of the books, but, maybe not. Hm.
I think the movies are not amazing. The books... oh, how I love thee
Embarrassingly, I did read all the Twilight books... I enjoyed them but they REALLY annoyed me. Mostly because of the ridiculously obvious abstinence messages - Not that I think that's a bad message, it was just pushed in your face at EVERY turn... I think teenage readers are more intelligent than that!
But the vampire craze in general? I think its the same old Bad Boy Mystique... nice girl falls in love with someone dangerous. If you want a quick fun read, you might try the Sookie Stackhouse books (what True Blood is based on) - much more fun / much less angst!
I have to admit that I had no interest in reading them either, but when I finally did I was HOOKED! I borrowed the first one and read it in a few days and then ordered the next 3 and locked myself up for a weekend and read all 3 in a weekend! Yep, I was obsessed! However, I did not think the movie did the book justice at all. The movie was just ok and doesn't suck you in like the books did. I can't tell you why I was hooked, but I couldn't put them down! I highly recommend them!
I think before reading the books, most people are like, really? How can this possibly be so riveting? While I don't think Stephanie Meyer is a great writer, she is great at describing the force of longing, which is nice in a culture overloaded with sex. It doesn't hurt that she portrays the male hero Edward as the erfect man without him coming off as annoyng. It's a fun read that's hard to put down.
I haven't read the books either, but I did see the first movie. I will not be seeing the second movie if that says anything.
I haven't read or seen any of the movies either. I just don't get it.
But after seeing the trailer for New Moon, I did at Twilight to my Netflix cart. Haven't received it yet. If I like it, I guess I will see New Moon but I'm drawing the line there. I won't read the books!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one! :)
I read the books because my students are super into them and I wanted to know what they were talking about! I was not a huge fan of the movie. The books were a lot better and really fast, easy reads. You need to take them for what they are, which is ridiculous stories about vampires and stuff! I enjoyed them, but I did not become obsessed with the Twilight franchise!
I totally agree with you! I can't for the life of me figure out the hype, and I think that Rob guy is positively CREEPY and not hot at all...I just don't get it!
The books are incredibly well written... and you forget that they are teenagers. I don't think it's a young adult level. No vampire sex until you get to book 3 I think.
The movie was very lackluster in my opinion. I think you're better off reading the books.
Let's say this...it's a great story. I don't know what it is...it's just great. I DO NOT like the movie nearly as much as the book. I started reading them at the end of the summer and went through all 4 in like 2 weeks! I posted on my blog last night how I'm really not excited about the movie because Kristen does not play Bella like my imagination plays her when I read the books (to be fair I did see the movie first). It's a fantastic story and if you like to read I would read it.
I just read the first two books ... definitely young adult fiction with enough forbidden vampire love to keep it interesting. Haven't seen the movies, but the books are an enjoyable, no-brainer, good rainy day read.
Don't feel bad, I'd rather have Rhett Butler over a Vampire any day! However most of my girl friends really got into the books/movie (yes, they're Twerds!) and talked me into reading the books. Still don't know what the big huge deal is, but we're going to a midnight showing of New Moon tomorrow night as a GNO.
It's kind of like I told my husband...I'll go along with them on this because sometime they'll go along with me on something they may not really want to do.
I'm interested to hear what others have to say on this topic!
I was JUST like you a year ago. Did not, refused to "get it."
But my BFF (who happened to live above me at the time) banged on my floor one night saying that I HAD HAD HAD to read "this book about a vampire."
She brought it down and it sat on my bedside table for 2 months.
After I picked up Twilight, I read it in 4 days.
Then it took me a week of spring break to finish the series.
Yes, I spent my senior year of college's spring break reading the Twilight series on a beach.
The books are a LOT about forbidden love, but also about romance. The story had so many fun twists and turns (even if I saw them coming) that I couldn't put it down.... it's just a great story... regardless if it makes me feel like a 12 year old.
After I had read them and forced all my college BFFs to do the same, I brought the books home to my high school BFFs. They all read and LOVED them.
Which is why we made t-shirts and are going to New Moon at midnight on Thursday night.
Read the books - they're totally entertaining and worth the time.
Yes, really, vampires. :) But really, I hear you. Vampires? That's what I thought too, but Jen Lancaster (of "Bitch is the New Black" and other hilarious books) recommended Twilight and I've enjoyed nearly everything she's ever recommended. So, I read it. I was hooked. I couldn't read the books fast enough. (This was before the HUGE Twilight insanity hit the country, pre-movies, pre Robert Pattinson's face on every magazine, so it made it a bit easier not to hate the books before I read them.) I can see how it might be harder to read with an open mind now.
I can't say that the books aren't about vampires, because they are. But, at least for me, that wasn't what I focused on when reading. It was the love story. If you don't mind suspending reality, I think you'd enjoy story. They're fun, fast reads.
As much as I loved the books, I HATED the movie. I'll probably see the second one anyway in hopes that more attention = bigger budget = less crappy movie but I might wait for dvd.
Geez, that was a long comment. Sorry.
I'm not into it either! I tried watching the first movie and couldn't finish it. I'll stick to Nicholas Sparks...those are my kind of love stories :-)
Haven't seen the movies but I LOVED the books- poor writing and all. Seriously, they totally suck you in and it's impossible not to read them all. You just really end up caring for the characters more than any respectable 30 year old should. Sad, truly!! I wouldn't bother with the movies, but then again, I'm a book reader!!
I totally know where you're coming from. I was TOTALLY against seeing the movie because of all the hype and probably wouldn't have if my step-daughters hadn't been SO excited to watch it with us. When they came to visit over the summer they brought their dvd and I continued to put off "movie night." (I know, shame on me!) I finally relented and somewhere during the movie I became hooked and ended up loving it! I've yet to read the books (although many people I know continue to rave about them) but will definitely see New Moon in the theater.
I can't promise you'll love it but I think it's definitely worth a rental :-)
The first book is so much better than the movie just an FYI.
I read the first book, and it's pretty good. You have to keep in mind that it's written for grade-school kids and high school kids, but for some reason apeals to all ages.
I saw the first movie and didn't like it. The acting was HORRIBLE. he book was MUCH better.
Haha I'm a twilight lover..mostly because I am a sucker for a good love story..plus it's an easy, fun, escape sort of read. I would recommend reading Twilight versus the movie.
Ok, I had the same opinion as you for a looooong time. I thought this vampire mumbo jumbo was absolutely absurd. I swore to not get on the bandwagon! And then (strange as this may sound) I had to read Twilight for a women's studies course I had in college. And I was hooked. Simple as that.
The books are certainly not technical reads but they are addictive (at least for me!) and fun. I enjoyed the first movie a lot, but it lacked some of detail that was given in the book. Oh gosh, why am I rambling about Twilight? It's like I'm a teenage girl! How embarrassing! Watch the movie and let me know what you think! Rob Pattinson is a hottie, after all! :) Have a wonderful evening, lady! xoxo
I am SOOOO not typically into this type of thing either. Last year, I decided to read Twilight due to all of the hype and I have to say, I LOVED the first book! The second was rough to get through and I got bored during the third and quit. I would recommend the first one though. :)
Someone gave me the book last year for my birthday and I never could get into it. And with all the free time I had, you would have thought I would have at least finished it.
But I can't seem to get into it either. I just don't get.
Glad I am not the only one!
THANK YOU! Glad to know I'm not the only one completely out of the Twilight loop. Also, I think Robert Pattinson's face looks like a foot.
And P.S. I LOVED those GG NY Mag articles you recommended. Something to look forward to every week.
I have not and have no desire to read the books, but the first movie was good and looking forward to seeing the second one.
I thought the first movie was more of a chick flick than a thriller so that is why I liked it! :)
probably just made some people mad! oh well!
I felt the same way that you did until I read the books. I had seen the movie and liked it, but still didn't understand what all of the fuss was about. Then my coworker told me that I just had to read the books. I've read all of them within the past month or so. They are fabulous. They are quick reads, but totally suck you into the characters, plot, etc. I highly highly recommend them!
I don't get it either? I really don't. I saw the first movie and it wasn't bad ... but it wasn't the best movie either.
I read a few pages of the first book but I couldn't get in to it. My sister couldn't either.
As for the Edward thing - I like a man. A muscular, adult, man who could grow a beard (could is the key word here, I don't like beards).
I don't understand it? At least I'm not the only one!
I'm with you on this one. I havne't read and don't really plan on it despite all my coworkers insistence. Don't like vampires, never have.
I was in the exact same boat as you... Trust me- you don't get it until you read it. Either rent the first movie or read the first book. Seriously. do it.
I asked a group of high schoolers I mentor that question tonight.
The reaction was crazy. They could NOT stop talking about it.
The girls said forbidden, exciting, dangerous love. And action, from the boys side.
Still don't understand.
read a book 1st - the movie is super cheesy ... well so is the book but it is a good read. No sex. :)
A better series is The Hunger Games - they are also making a movie.
I haven't gotten into it yet and after seeing how crazy people are about it..I don't think I will!
I think that the mix of romance and sci-fi makes is so great. I think for me it is the fantasy of it all. The books are very vivid and the movies are just like the books. Come on give it a try...you just might like it.
I hear you - but that's because I don't really like vampire/ghost stories - they still scare me!
I confess to having read the first one, mostly to quiet someone, and better articulate my argument against these books. It's simple, if you like Vampire mythology fine, great, there are better books out there. The part where every ideal man is a stalker? I'm a little less than fond of. I do not understand the appeal of these books to young women.
You are wonderful to raise the question *and* to solicit input, the feedback is fascinating. I haven't read word one, nor seen a frame of video, and it is unlikely I will. Having said that, I am all in favor of anything that really engages young teens in reading, unless it is inappropriate, and I haven't really heard that the series is. (it may be I just haven't seen criticism of this nature as I kind of ignore most anything on the topic unless it's like today when I post pix of everyone in their party frocks at a premiere, but that was about the fashions, not the content.
A long-winded way of saying "You are not alone on this one, not by a long shot, which the comments makeclear.
Great topic!
I read it on a plane (and finished it within a day) when we were traveling this summer and then borrowed the next two books, because I wanted to see what happened. But by the end of the third book I was totally annoyed by the bad writing and went to spoileralert.com (or something like that) to find out how it all ended. I'm glad I did that because the ending sounded extra dumb. (No offense to people who thought it wasn't.)
I thought the movie was entertaining and we'll probably netflix New Moon whenever it comes out on DVD.
I wasn't into it either - didn't read the books, didn't see the first one in the theater. But then, with nothing else even halfway tempting to rent, I rented Twilight and was pleasantly surprised. I liked it... a lot. I still haven't read the books but I will watch the second movie.
Poor writing, great story-telling. If you are a romantic, you'll like it. If you're not, you won't. Brings out the 14yo girl in you. You'll either fall hard for Edward or you'll hate it. The books are total literary junk food. Think of it was guilty pleasure TV in book form.
I'm even worse off than you - I read the first two and have no desire to read the others! Not really sure why, I just don't see what the big deal is! I'm a new follower - love your blog!
